Home office

I never quite believed that working from home is a good idea. When you are at the office you get into working mode quite fast, you have all you colleagues near by.

A few weeks ago I finally managed to bring home my old desktop pc from work. It's a bit outdated piece of hardware but still the most powerful windows running device that I have. As long as I can make a remote connection to my office state-of-the-art developing computer it does the job just perfectly.

Once I've resolved hardware issues I was able to try out work from home. I do tend to try thing out before making final judgement. So I did. And it worked quite nicely. I'm able to get into the zone (Joel Spolsky posted a nice text about the zone issue way back in 2000, just read the second half of the post) even faster than in the office and while having less distractions you can produce more in the same time.

To be able to do so, you ought to be self-disciplined, it helps if you don't have kids running around and your caring parents asking what you had for breakfast and if you'll be joining them for lunch at one o'clock. Although the far more important factor is the weather. Foggy, rainy days are the best for work at home, while the sunny may be too tempting to just let it all go and go out for a spin.

At job we have rule for work at home: we can work in our home offices one day per week. It's an ok starting point. We'll see where we can get from there.
